National Institute of Siddha celebrated International Day of Yoga on 21-6-2017 at the open ground in the premises. Shri Tenkasi .S. Jawahar IAS, Principal Secretary / Commissioner, Treasuries & Accounts, Government of Tamil Nadu graced the occasion as chief guest. The yoga session started at 7.00 am by lighting the lamp followed by welcome address by Prof.Dr.V.Banumathi, Director, National Institute of Siddha. Director welcomed the Chief-guest Shri Tenkasi S.Jawahar and all the PG students, staff, public, press and media participating in the event. Former Director Prof.Dr.K.Manickavasakam and former Dean Prof.Dr.M.Murugesan also graced the occasion.
Chief Guest Shri Tenkasi .S. Jawahar IAS, expressed happiness at the fact that yoga has become popular globally and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for it. He also stated that many countries are celebrating the IDY. This is third International Day of Yoga. He appreciated the Director and NIS for its excellent healthcare service to the humanity. He specially mentioned the research publication made by NIS and wished the Institute to continue to do more of translational research so as to reach the benefit to people. Shri T.S.Jawahar IAS performed Asanas at the event along with staff and public. He has taken part extensively in the Yoga events and also shared his words of wisdom with us.
On the eve of International Day of Yoga, essay competition on “Evidences of Yoga in Siddha” was also conducted by inviting essay from UG / PG students of Siddha Medical Colleges on or before 15-6-2017. A total of 55 (PG-16, UG-39) essays were received from students of 5 colleges. The evaluation was made by Independent committee and results declared.
Shri T.S.Jawahar IAS gave away the prize for the winners of essay competition at the dais.
Dr.Periyasamay, Lecturer, Department of Sirappu Maruthuvam and Dr.Paechiammal, Yoga Teacher trained staff members and students in performing various asanas during the last two weeks and also led the mass yoga session from the stage. PG students of Department of Sirappu Maruthuvam performed the demonstration exercises at the start of yoga session and then all participants performed Asanas. About 800 participants participated in the yoga session. T-shirts with logo of International Day of Yoga and NIS were distributed to all participants before the programme. Herbal tea and refreshment were distributed to all the participants after the mass yoga programme. Different booklets for awareness on life-style disorder such as Hypertension, Diabetes, Stress, Obesity management with Yoga and Siddha treatment were also distributed in the event. The programme ended with vote of thanks.
