Cancer is the third most important cause for death in the Indian population. 90% of cancer treatment facilities are available only in urban areas and leaving rural communities without the opportunity to screen, diagnose, and treat patients with cancer, many of whom are diagnosed at later and less treatable stages. People in nonmetropolitan areas are more likely to die from cancer than their urban and suburban counterparts, and that gap is widening.
The awareness and early detection of the cancer pave the way for successful treatment of Cancer. In this view, as per the direction of Prof. Dr. R. Meenakumari, Director, NIS, National Institute of Siddha conducted an Awareness and Screening camp for Breast, Cervix and Oral cancer for Women in the Siddha outreach OPD of NIS at Kothimangalam village, Thirukkazhukundram, Chengalpattu district in association with Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar on 10.11.2023 (Friday).
About 50 people participated in the awareness program and 25 women underwent screening for breast and Cervical cancer. Under the guidance of Dr. J. Maliga, Professor and Head, Dept. of Preventive oncology, the Medical officer, Dr. D. Premila grace and her dedicated Medical team from Cancer Institute undertook cancer screening activity and conducted training for breast self examination.
The faculty from NIS, Dr. H. Vetha Merlin Kumari, Associate Professor and Dr. C. Mary Sharmila, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Maruthuvam gave awareness on Cancer and Siddha dietary regime for prevention of cancer.
The Medical officer of Kothimangalam Dr. R. Aavinda Senbagaraman and Dr. B. R. Senthilkumar, HoD i/c, Dept. of Physiology, National Institute of Siddha coordinated the entire program.
